Same Old Tired Thinking

If there’s anything we’ve learned about the 2008 presidential election cycle, it’s that this year it’s about Change.

So why is John McCain still peddling the same old tired thinking that has landed our country in this economic quagmire?

While Senator Obama and most of the nation is looking forward, Senator McCain is most definitely looking backward.  His suggestion this week that states should be allowed to reconsider offshore oil drilling is the perfect example that McCain just doesn’t get it.  The nation has moved beyond the “we can drill our way out of this situation” thinking.

All of us, except McCain and the oil companies that is.

At the time when we need leadership that will commit us to developing alternative energy sources, leadership that will invest in and jump start the next technological revolution, McCain has offered us proof that his administration would be just more of the same.

Under McCain, Big Oil lobbyists would still be writing national energy policy.  No one else wants to open up offshore oil drilling where doing so would not benefit consumers or have any effect on world oil supply or prices.  The only beneficiaries of offshore drilling are Big Oil CEOs.

Sound familiar?  Yes, the same folks who brought us $4 a gallon gasoline.  The same people who have been running the store the past seven years under President Bush,

And McCain doesn’t see any need for change.  He’d rather drill than invest.  He’d rather listen to the oil companies than to us.

In 2008, when voters come to the fork in the road, they can choose to take a new path with Obama or continue down the same one with McCain.

With more pronouncements like this one, McCain is going to be on a lonely path.

a leopard can't change his spots. he may wallow in mud or trample through the snow to camoflage himself, but his true colors will always show through.

rather than thoughtful responses to issues, maccain - and the conservatives - have wrapped themselves so much so in their story line that all their answers are reflexive.

they have no unique solution for anything; it's amazing...for instance, to them every problem in america is caused by taxes, and the solution to any problem is no taxes.

they are almost robotic in their responses. and quite frankly, it might be that they can't change.

Drilling for oil is just a distraction. The real issue is the utter failure to address our energy needs in a more effecient manner. France and Brazil have leapt forward into the 21st Century namely because they kept the focus on advancing the needs of their citizens by finding efficient alternatives to oil, not tax breaks for Big Oil and corporate America.

For most of the past year I have been an enthusiastic supporter of Barack Obama, but have begun to see that he is really not the new voice he says he is. He may speak the words, but the actions betray him. He is really no different than any other politician seeking power. He is now backpedaling and consolidating his base in the traditional forms. I suspect that he will continue to reveal that his earlier stances that attracted so many were just appearances that will now disappear like smoke, that his only focus will be to get elected. While I donated the maximum for the primary I do not intend to donate anything to his general election. While I cannot and will not vote for John McCain, I am not sure that I will be able to vote for Obama either. If I do not vote for president this would be the first time since 1972. I am really disappointed in his actions over the last month.

But, ddavis, there seems to be nothing new coming from John McCain. He hasn't established a track record of innovation. He is also surrounded by the 'same old tired' people with the same old tired thinking. Obama at least offers the possibility for a fresh approach to governance. Basing a critical vote on what appears to be backpedaling may be too simplistic. Voting for the possibility of change may be better than voting for the certainty of the 'same'.
